The inception workshop “Family Farming Problems from the Perspective of Natural Resources Management: Land – Water – Forest – Pastures” was conducted in Jannat Regency Hotel in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz Republic on 21 December 2018 to support family farming in Kyrgyzstan. The workshop was devoted to the UN International Family Farming Decade: 2019-2028.
As part of the support and implementation of the UN International Family Farming Decade, four CSOs of Kyrgyzstan attended the workshop namely National Union of Water Users Associations, Kyrgyz Association of Forest and Land Users, National Association of Pasture Users and Rural Development Fund have initiated the establishment of National Committee for Family Farming (NCFF) with the support of World Rural Forum (WRF).
The main purpose of NCFF is advocacy and creation of favorable conditions for the sustainable development of family farms and rural communities in the Kyrgyz Republic. In the future, NCFF will be a platform for farmer organizations and grassroots organizations that will represent and protect the interests of family farming; speak out consistent, balanced and constructive proposals for improving the legal framework for the development of family farming in Kyrgyzstan; as well as formulate the relevant appeals to the governmental authorities. To achieve these targets, all activities of NCFF will be aimed at proactive collaboration and partnership with the relevant governmental and municipal authorities regulating the national policy of agricultural and rural development of the country and at wide involvement of all stakeholders – civil society organizations in the process. This workshop is aimed at raising public and government awareness of this initiative. In addition, the workshop has launched the campaign to promote the UN Family Farming Decade in Kyrgyzstan.
The workshop was attended by representatives of Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Processing and Land Improvement of the Kyrgyz Republic, the National Statistics Committee, farmers, and representatives of various projects of international development partners (FAO, WB, IFAD). The workshop was held at a high level with the proactive participation of all invitees which expressed their support to the establishment of the National Committee for Family Farming.
